Risks of AI for Resume or Interview Prep

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have quickly become a popular resource for job seekers and pageant candidates who are looking to polish their resumes or fact sheets. It is also increasingly used in preparing candidates for interviews. With just a few prompts, AI can generate professional language, organize experience, and even tailor resumes for specific roles. It can generate potential interview questions and craft responses. While these tools can be helpful, relying too heavily on AI may be risky and caution is advisable.

One of the biggest concerns is loss of authenticity. AI often generates polished but generic language that can make candidates sound similar to one another. As more candidates use AI, AI is used to screen applicants. Hiring managers read hundreds of resumes, and those that feel overly scripted or vague may fail to stand out. Employers or judges want to understand you—your voice, your achievements, and the specific value you bring. Pageant judges can tell when the contestant has not created their fact sheets or their interview answers seem inauthentic. This disconnect can lead to qualified candidates failing to rise to the next level.

Another risk is inaccuracy. AI tools may misinterpret information or embellish responsibilities in ways that are misleading. If a resume includes claims that cannot be supported during an interview, it can quickly damage credibility with potential employers/judges.

Over-optimization can be problematic. Many AI tools attempt to tailor resumes for applicant tracking systems (ATS). While keywords are important, stuffing a resume with excessive buzzwords can make it stilted and unnatural and difficult for human recruiters to read. A resume should balance keyword strategy with clear, meaningful storytelling about your work and life experiences.

Privacy is another consideration. When users upload resumes or personal career histories into AI platforms, they may unknowingly share sensitive information with third-party systems. It’s important to understand how those platforms store and use your data.

AI can be very helpful when used as a support tool. The key is to craft very specific prompts enhanced with appropriate personal information and data. The response can be a valuable starting point for brainstorming or editing. The strongest resumes and interview answers use smart technology combined with genuine reflection to highlight thinking, accomplishments, skills, and career goals. Ultimately, the goal of a resume or interview answer is not just to sound impressive—it is to accurately represent the person behind it.
